disease. So what is pneumococcal disease and why should you be concerned?
The common bacterium “pneumococcus,” or Streptococcus pneumoniae, is responsible for thousands of very serious childhood infections every year, especially in children from about 3 months to 3 years of age. These infections include bacterial meningitis, a severe and potentially fatal infection of the spinal fluid and the tissues surrounding the brain. DHHS did not adhere to the Synar Amendment any more tightly than did state governments. DHHS did not take issue with any of the 3 states that allowed the sale of tobacco to minors without penalty. Funding was not withheld from any of the states that did not show evidence of enforcing their laws. (more…)

Although federal law requires states to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to minors, most states do not enforce these laws. Furthermore, the federal government fails to punish states whose enforcement is lax despite federal laws which require such penalties. As a result of this weak regulation of tobacco retailers, children under 18 can easily obtain cigarettes, thus exposing themselves to the leading preventable cause of death in this country. (more…)
