Statins Prevent Stroke in Heart Patients

We know that high cholesterol raises your risk for coronary artery disease, but what about for stroke? Most studies that have looked for a compelling link between cholesterol and stroke haven’t found one. Strangely, however, some research has found that taking the cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins may cut the risk of stroke. A large new study in the January 19 Circulation supports these findings, suggesting that statins may help heart patients avoid stroke, even if they have average cholesterol levels. (more…)

Recheck Cholesterol If Your Statin Changes

Fluvastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin — it’s clear these cholesterol lowering agents are all members of the same class of drugs, not surprisingly termed statins. For various reasons often related to price, managed care plans will sometimes switch you from one statin to another. But statins aren’t interchangeable when it comes to their effect on cholesterol, an issue raised by a research letter in the December 5, 1998, Lancet. (more…)

Ovulation Detection Methods

There are several different ways to track when ovulation occurs in your cycle, and you may need to practice these methods for several cycles before getting pregnant. The first method for detecting ovulation is the cervical mucus method. The consistency of the cervical mucus changes throughout a woman’s cycle. At the beginning of the cycle, it is thick and cloudy; it then becomes more transparent and thin as ovulation approaches. At the time of ovulation, the mucus is at its thinnest and most transparent, and is also quite elastic.

Exercises for Back

This week was another eye opener for me. Sharon challenged me to eat more fruits and vegetables and I failed the test. I’ve got to get in gear and have healthy foods on hand. I’ve realized my two littlest ones are lacking, as well. With the four older children, I carefully monitored what they ate and supplied appropriate amounts of fruits and vegetables. I don’t know what happened in that seven-year gap, but I don’t do that as well with the younger two. Something has got to change. (more…)
